What happens in the placement assessment?
The student works through a short written paper pitched a little below their year group, then a little above, so we can find where the reliable ground ends. There is no time pressure and no mark is reported. We keep the paper, annotate it, and use it to decide which group they join. It takes forty-five minutes and there is no charge.
What if my child misses a session?
Tell us before the session if you can. The tutor writes the topic and the week's task into the exercise book, and the student picks both up at the start of the next session with ten minutes of tutor time to catch up. Missed sessions are not refunded, but a student may sit in on the equivalent group in another slot that fortnight if a chair is free.
How much homework is set?
One task per week, designed to take twenty to thirty minutes, and started in the last fifteen minutes of the session so nobody goes home unsure what to do. We would rather have one piece done properly than a pack handed back blank. The task is marked in the following session, in front of the student.
Do you follow my child's exam board?
Yes for the papers and the mark schemes, which we hold for the main boards and work from directly. The teaching order follows the school's scheme of work where we can, which is why we ask which topics are being covered in class. Where a group contains two boards, the shared content is taught together and the board-specific content is set as directed work.
What if the group I want is full?
We hold a short waiting list per group and never add a seventh chair. If a slot is full we will tell you where you sit on the list, when a place is most likely to open, and whether a different slot at the same level would work in the meantime. Nothing is paid while you are waiting.
Can you support a student with additional needs?
Often, and we would rather discuss it honestly than promise it. Tell us what helps at school — extra time, a reader, printed notes, a particular seat, a predictable routine — and we will say plainly whether a six-student group can provide it. The room is quiet and the sessions are highly structured, which suits many students, but it is one floor up and reached by stairs.
How will I know whether it is working?
You get a short written note at the half-term point: what has been covered, what the student can now do unaided, and the one thing we are working on next. If something is going wrong before then, we contact you rather than waiting for the note.
Can we try a single session before committing to a term?
Yes. After the assessment you may take one session at the single-session rate before deciding on the term. We do not offer rolling weekly booking beyond that, because a group that changes composition every week stops being a group.
